1892 Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker" publicly premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia; although now considered a classic, it received a generally negative reception from critics.

1908 The city's filtration plant, undertaken in 1905, began delivering the first filtered water to residents.

1950 More than 8,000 members of 19 other American Federation of Labor unions returned to work after AFL delivery drivers ended a 29-day strike against the three major department stores - Kaufmann's, Gimbels and Horne's.

1980 A grand jury identified WTAE-TV personality Nick Perry as the planner of the $1.8 million lottery fix. Perry supposedly netted $35,000 as his share of the winnings.
