I HAVE enormous sympathy with the notion of Christine Flanagan that we should all be able to retire at 60 (Viewpoints, Friday December 15).

It is certainly possible with modern technology if we started rooting out wasteful, timeconsuming regulations and bureaucracy.

However, there is a big problem. Christine says she has worked for more than 30 years.

If she retired at 60, with a bit of luck she could live over 35 years in retirement.

We could have more retired people than working people.

So working people would then get to keep very little of their wages - it would mostly be taxed to assist and educate children and give money to pensioners. …
