Students Hone Language, Management Skills Via English Newspaper Contest

A group of students from Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin Junior High and Senior High School in Tokyo has won this year's English-language newspaper production contest for their "Maple Times," which introduced topics including the school's long-standing motto and club activities.

The All Japan Junior and Senior High School English Newspaper Contest, organized by the Global Education Information Center (GEIC), is aimed at developing students' abilities to deal with the continuing globalization and changing circumstances Japan is facing by producing an English-language newspaper on their own. This is the second consecutive year for the contest to be held.

Sixteen groups from 13 high schools, some of which are combined with junior high schools, and a cram school participated in this year's contest, which was supported by The Japan News.

Under the GEIC's English Newspaper Production Project, students are expected to learn and improve skills, such as English as an international language; project implementation; and information and media literacy. With the help of instructors, the participating students decided what topics to take up, conducted interviews, took pictures, wrote stories and designed the page layouts.

"We were engaged in the project for several months and especially struggled with writing in English. But when we saw a copy of our paper printed, we screamed with excitement," said Merisa Shimozaki, a second-year Toyo Eiwa high school student, sharing the joy of winning the top English Newspaper Award with other group members during a presentation event held Sunday in Tokyo. …
