Sloth Gives Birth Saturday at Topeka Zoo

A Hoffman's Two-Toed Sloth born Saturday at the Topeka Zoo and its mother appeared Monday to be "bright and alert and doing great" in the zoo's Tropical Rain Forest, the city of Topeka indicated in a news release that said "Christmas came early" for the zoo.

The sloth -- named Foley by the rainforest's primary zookeeper -- became the 15th offspring of its mother, 27-year-old Jacque, and the fourth of its father, 19-year-old Mocha.

The birth increased the zoo's sloth population to four. Its other young sloth -- Foley's sibling, Newt -- is 1 year old.

The gender of Foley and Newt aren't yet known, said Molly Hadfield, media relations coordinator for the city.

Foley was clinging to Jacque in a good nursing position Monday while "doing everything a baby sloth should do," the news release said. …
