Letter writer Tim Hannon chose his facts so selectively in his Dec. 20 letter, "GOP Tax-Cut Plan Is Right Step for Nation," that I half expected a tagline to reveal that he was a contributor to Fox News.

Mr. Hannon laments that the top 1 percent of the U.S. population carries what he thinks is an unfair 39 percent of our tax burden. He fails to mention, however, that, according to the most recent report from the Federal Reserve, this same group controls 39 percent of the nation's wealth.

Had he mentioned that, though, readers might conclude that the rich didn't really need a tax cut after all.

Mr. Hannon then goes on to complain that the bottom 50 percent of Americans pay 2.83 percent of federal income tax.

Again, the facts that he chooses to ignore tell the real story, which is that this group holds only about 1 percent of the nation's wealth. …
