Purina Offers Employees Early Retirement in Cost-Cutting Effort

Nestl Purina PetCare is eliminating up to 300 positions at its U.S. facilities, including its headquarters in St. Louis, through an early retirement option available to managers and other leaders.

Purina, the maker of Beneful, Fancy Feast and other pet foods, notified employees at the end of November about the new "Vision 2020" initiative that's open to retirement-eligible managers or supervisors age 55 or over who have worked at the company for at least a decade.

"We believe fewer leaders will increase our agility and encourage cross-functional communication, empowerment and speed of decision-making," the company said in an email to employees earlier this month.

Purina, a unit of Swiss based Nestl SA, had 8,000 U.S. employees at the end of 2016, including 2,186 in St. Louis, the headquarters for Purina's U.S. …
