VA Confirms Bed Bug, Cites Eradication Effort

Staff at Topeka's Colmery O'Neil VA Health Center were diverting ambulances from its emergency department Friday after discovery of a single bed bug, a spokesman said.

Public affairs officer Joseph Burks confirmed a bed bug was found Friday near the nursing station in the VA's emergency department. He said eradication efforts began immediately.

Burks said the emergency room would temporarily divert incoming ambulances to other community medical facilities during the eradication process, but walk-in patients would still be seen because staff could treat them in other unaffected units.

Bed bugs don't transmit disease, but their bites may cause itchy red welts in some people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The VA has previously used insecticide in its emergency department, but this time was using heat to eradicate any other bed bugs, Burks said. …
