9-Year-Old Thrown from Car in Suspected DUI Crash

A Pittsburgh mother suspected of driving under the influence was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after police said she caused a crash on Route 28 in O'Hara that hurled her 9-year-old son 30 feet from the vehicle.

Pennsylvania State Police said the boy landed under a guard rail and was nearly run over, but suffered only a minor facial injury.

A second child in the car, the driver's 8-year-old son, was thrown against the rear window, causing it to shatter, police said. He was not injured.

The children were riding in the cargo area of the vehicle, and neither was properly restrained, police said. They were taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

The crash occurred at 3:42 p.m. between exits 10 and 11 when the driver, Lashelle Elaine Gibson, 41, was heading south and attempting to pass another vehicle by driving on the berm. …
