LYNDHURST — First responders rescued four victims from the roof of a Page Avenue home Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in the house.

Officials said the fire was reported at 6:25 a.m. and under control by 6:40 a.m. The fire was limited to a hallway and one room.

Firefighters, with the help of Lyndhurst police, rescued four people from the home's steeply sloped and icy roof, said Lyndhurst Fire Chief Joe Abruscato.

Because the house was set back from the street, and with the location of power lines, the victims had to be rescued via ground ladders, the chief said.

"It was a slate roof and icy and very dangerous," Abruscato said, adding that the victims managed a tricky climb onto the roof from second-floor windows. "They were perched up there."

The locations of the victims were split between the front and the back of the house. Abruscato credited the responding police officers with finding a ladder alongside the house and using it to pull two of the victims off the back roof. …
