Glen Rock Humbled by Tough Loss to Chatham

WAYNE – If Glen Rock harbors any hopes of repeating as a state public school champion, it is going to have to master playing the kind of gauntlet games that the Panthers have lined up at the Pepsi Holiday Classic at the Ice Vault.

Glen Rock started a three-games-in-four-days run against Chatham, and it was the Cougars who controlled the pace for much of the game. Their dominant play led to a 3-1 victory that left Glen Rock stunned.

"First game off winter break, and we played like we were still on break," Glen Rock coach Anthony Yelovich said. "Chatham came in here and outplayed us and they deserved to win. They wanted it more than us, they were hungrier and hats off to Chatham."

The tone was set early, as the Panthers could not get the puck out of their own end. Chatham (6-2) spent large chunks of time cycling the puck in the Glen Rock zone, and the Panthers helped them out with a penalty. The ensuing power play saw Chatham take the lead on a David Andreychuk goal, the only score of the opening period.

The Cougars doubled up at 5:35 of the second with Jack Deletto getting a goal from just off the inside edge of the left circle. Still owning play, Chatham then committed back-to-back penalties, giving the Panthers a 5-on-3 chance.

Seven seconds into the advantage, Matthew Maselli scored for Glen Rock at 11:36, and it seemed to give the Panthers (7-2-1) some energy. They came close to an equalizer, but had a shot go over the top of the net and a couple of others go just wide.

The third period saw a return to Glen Rock's lackluster play of the first two periods, and Chatham again made the Panthers pay. This time it was on a rebound in front, with Matt Keane putting the puck past goalie Ryan McAuley.

"I can't really explain it," Yelovich said. "Worst game of the season, absolutely. Our mind-set was still on break. …
