On New Year's Day, The Record and NorthJersey.com renews its promise to readers to advocate for issues and polices that improve the lives of the people of New Jersey. These issues may be intensely local, statewide or even national — but they all matter to you and to us.

We renew our credo this year knowing 2017 has been a year of changes for the nation, for the state and for us. As 2018 begins, we see equal challenges ahead — a new governor, Phil Murphy, and congressional midterm elections, to name just two. The Record and NorthJersey.com will continue to evolve into something beyond print — into an expansive, digital platform for news, for discussion — for our readers.

As with all changes, there have been adjustments along the road. But the destination has never changed and will not change. Our core mission remains the same.

We are 100 percent committed to defending the First Amendment. There are no rights more precious than the ability to speak freely without fear of prosecution, to worship without fear and to have an independent press that is a vigilant check against government overreach and abuse.

We are your advocate in borough halls, school board rooms and the State House. We are Jersey first and proud of it.

There are no sacred cows. We will follow every story to its conclusion. Our news pages will remain free of bias and partisanship. Our editorials will continue to reflect the institutional voice of The Record and NorthJersey.com. Letters to the editor and the opinion pages will reflect the diversity of views in North Jersey.

We will continue to defend personal liberty, social justice, the constitutional right of a woman to make her own reproductive choices, and full equality for all people regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity.
