ST. LOUIS * Pipes and water mains have been bursting all over the region in the recent days of bitter cold.

Not even the water company was spared.

An Alton call center for American Water, the main water provider in the area, had to be evacuated Tuesday night after a pipe broke. Employees returned to work after the water to the pipe was shut off, a company spokesperson said in an email.

Similar scenes are playing out across the area.

Missouri American Water reported there have been about 60 breaks per day during the cold snap. The company has more than 40 crews working to repair the breaks and launched a reverse 911 call, an automated phone alert to keep customers updated.

Water main breaks caused by the cold resulted in enough loss of pressure in much of the Metro East that Illinois American Water issued a boil advisory Wednesday. The affected area includes much of St. Clair County and parts of Monroe County.

The utility company instructs customers to bring their water to a rolling boil for five minutes before use for drinking or cooking during the advisory. …
