Dozens of Firefighters Scramble New Year's Day to Battle Manitoba Hotel Blaze

New Year's Day bleak day for Manitoba hotel

THOMPSON, Man. - A large hotel in Thompson, Man., has been left a smouldering ruin after a New Year's Day blaze that took dozens of firefighters to put out.

Crews were called to the three-storey Interior Inn when flames started tearing through the 45-room structure Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were still at the scene this morning watching for hot spots and pouring water on the wreckage that continued to belch thick smoke.

Fire Chief John Maskerine says none of his firefighters was hurt and all the guests had been located.

The RCMP said the building was quickly evacuated and that they had not had any reports of injuries, although an early media report said one person taken from a room was treated at hospital for smoke inhalation.

Parts of the first and second floors were engulfed in flames and the blaze was beginning to eat its way into the third floor by the time firefighters got to the scene. …
