Vilifying the police

I find it unsettling that some people seem to assume that meth-inflamed, gun-wielding miscreants deserve special kid glove treatment, while those members of the community assigned the unpleasant task of protecting the citizenry are vilified for doing their job and protecting themselves.

Those police officers leave their families behind when they head to work each morning, and they have every right to come home to those families at the end of their shift.

The fact that somebody else made some really terrible decisions that day should in no way obscure the focus of what is really important: That police have the right and duty to protect themselves as their very first priority in any life-threatening situation. …
