A service meltdown at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Saturday continued to have ripple effects on airline passengers Sunday.

A Thursday snowstorm, coupled with weekend temperatures in the single digits, "created a cascading series of issues for the airlines and terminal operators," the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said on Sunday.

The result: Luggage piled up, passengers waited for hours either on the tarmac or in the terminal, equipment broke down and dozens of flights were diverted or canceled.

Then, on Sunday, a water main broke in Terminal 4, leading to the shutdown of international arrivals in the terminal and still more flight cancellations and diversions.

"These challenges left passengers on planes for extensive periods, as the airlines and terminal operators experienced delays in getting aircraft in and out of gates," the Port Authority said. …
