ST. LOUIS > Raja the elephant will be no-show at own party * It's Raja's party, and he'll stay inside if he wants to.

The St. Louis Zoo's bull elephant, who turns 25 on Wednesday, won't make a public appearance because of the extreme cold. Raja and the zoo's other elephants instead will keep warm in their indoor, climate-controlled barn.

Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing this week, the National Weather Service says.

But the public is invited to party without the birthday boy. Visitors can leave greetings in an oversize card, learn more about elephants at keeper chats, and enjoy birthday cupcakes and hot chocolate (available for purchase) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the zoo's Lakeside Cafe.

Born Dec. 27, 1992, Raja was the first Asian elephant born at the zoo and has since sired four female calves Maliha, Jade, Kenzi and Priya.

This week, the zoo is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on New Year's Eve. …
