Sundqvist Returns and Looks for First Goal

After six games as a healthy scratch, Oskar Sundqvist finally got to ring in the New Year on the ice for a Blues game in 2018.

"It's been awhile," said Sundqvist, who centered the fourth line Tuesday against Florida.

Sundqvist has kept his spirits up and kept working during his down time. Until Tuesday, he last played Dec. 27 against Nashville.

"First of all, I've been working hard when I haven't played," he said. "Especially on the skates after practice."

For the first time in his career, Sundqvist has been on an NHL roster since opening day. In his previous two seasons combined, he played 28 games for Pittsburgh, scoring one goal with three assists.

Even with his recent string of inactivity, Sundqvist has topped those two seasons in the Pittsburgh organization in little more than three months with the Blues. Tuesday marked his 30th regular-season game for St. Louis.

"I'm learning something new every day," Sundqvist said. "You have some great leaders in this room. And luckily for me, I've got a couple Swedes who've been here a long time and been in the league for a long time. So it's been helping me a lot. I've had a blast this whole season so far."

Now, if only he could score a goal. Sundqvist has done a lot of things right for the Blues. He plays strong defense, is good on the checking game and is a solid passer. He's not afraid of contact, and isn't shy about blocking a puck. (Remember him crawling off the ice after taking one in the leg Nov. 16 in Edmonton?)

But Sundqvist, who scored four goals in a game last season for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pittsburgh's American Hockey League affiliate, just can't find the net. He had zero goals and three assists this season entering Tuesday's game, with 32 shots on goal.

"It seems like I've been doing the right stuff," Sundqvist said. "But haven't gotten my way in the scoring part. …
