Fire Chief Candidate Declines Teaneck Post

TEANECK — Paul Browning, a 24-year veteran of the township Fire Department who was expected to be sworn in as fire chief Tuesday night, has declined the position.

He was expected to replace Anthony Verley, who joined the department 30 years ago and has served as its chief since 2010.

"He decided to decline the position," Township Manager William Broughton said. "Tomorrow we'll name a new acting chief, and then we'll go from there."

Browning notified the township of his decision Tuesday afternoon, Broughton said.

Four other members of the department were promoted at Tuesday night's Township Council meeting. Firefighter Sergio Caamano was promoted to lieutenant, Lt. Edward Gallone Jr. to captain, Capt. Sean Mackey to battalion chief and Battalion Chief Joseph Berchtold to deputy chief. …
