Dogs Rescued in Paterson to Be Groomed for Sake of Health

PATERSON — Five of the 12 dogs found crammed inside three cages Tuesday, their paws matted with their own feces, have been sent to a Morris Plains animal clinic to be specially groomed, officials said Wednesday.

The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge took in the 12 dogs, which included poodles and Chihuahas, after they were rescued from a city home this week. Executive Director Megan Brinster said five of the most seriously injured dogs have been taken to the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains to be groomed.

"The matting is so tight and close to the skin and eyes that unless done right, the removal could also take off skin and create horrible sores," Brinster said. "Some of the matting was so severe on a few of the dogs they couldn't easily walk, and a few had their vision completely obscured by the matting. …
