County Jail Employees Sickened by Suspected Synthetic Pot

More than a dozen Allegheny County Jail employees have been sickened in the past two days by what jail officials believe was an airborne substance.

Seven correctional officers and a sergeant became ill Tuesday while searching cells on the lockup's 7E pod, Chief Deputy Warden David Zetwo said. On Wednesday, three corrections officers, a sergeant and two medical employees were taken to a hospital.

The 13 affected employees had symptoms that included sweating and elevated heart rates and blood pressure, officials said.

Two sources with knowledge of the situation told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the substance appeared to be K2, or synthetic marijuana.

Speaking about the incident that occurred on Tuesday, Mr. Zetwo said all the employees were treated and released. They returned to work and completed their shifts, he said. …
