I recently drove to Marco Island and back for my annual two-week vacation in Florida. I filled up my gas tank in Pittsburgh at $2.85 a gallon. During the trip, I went through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia. The highest I paid for gas after leaving Pennsylvania was a stop in Georgia at $2.44 a gallon. On the return, my final fill up was Wytheville, Va., at $2.09 a gallon. Doing the math, out-of-Pennsylvania gas prices were from 41 cents to 76 cents per gallon lower.

I paid approximately $4 in tolls, round trip. If I had been going from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and back, toll costs would be $80.

I bring these cost differences up because we are entering an election year, and campaigning has begun. I think we all should consider whether it makes sense to retain or promote those Pennsylvania politicians who have voted for higher gas taxes (though the most recent effort failed), or never-ending turnpike toll increases. …
