Hammer Attack and Carjacking Hit Paterson

PATERSON — A hammer-wielding thief attacked a robbery victim in the People's Park neighborhood, which is one of three serious crimes that took place on Monday within a five-hour period, police said.

The other two cases involved a carjacking in the 1st Ward and an armed robbery in the 5th Ward, police said.

The hammer attack happened near the corner of 21st Avenue and East 25th Street at about 8:30 p.m., police said. The victim, a 44-year-old city man, was walking down the street when he was confronted by a man wearing a ski mask who demanded his possessions, police said.

After the victim said he had nothing on him, the suspect began hitting him in the head, shoulder and hand with a hammer, police said.

The attacker took a cell phone from the victim's pocket and then ran to a nearby vehicle and escaped, police said. …
