"Vaping" has seen a huge surge in popularity in recent years as a seemingly much less dangerous alternative to smoking. Figures from Action on Smoking Health (ASH) show the number of e-cigarette users has more than quadrupled from the 700,000 users in 2012. Close analysis, however, reveals that the vast majority of that increase came in 2013, 2014 and 2015 - and since then the rise has been much slower. The data shows that between 2012 and 2013 the number of e-cigarette users soared by 86 per cent to to 1.3 million. It rose nearly as quickly the next year and stood at 2.1 million in 2014. By 2015 there were 2.6 million e-cigarette users in Great Britain, up 24 per cent from the previous year. The yearly rate of increase fell to just eight per cent in 2016, when there were 2.8 million users, and four per cent in 2017, when there were 2.9 million. The data might suggest e-cigarettes are rapidly approaching peak popularity - and that the maximum number people who are going to use them already do. E-cigarettes are handheld devices that imitate the action of smoking an actual cigarette. Flavoured solutions - usually including nicotine - go inside the e-cigarette and are heated to create a vapour, which is inhaled. E-cigarettes have been hailed as both a method of quitting smoking, and also a safer alternative to smoking. A 2015 Public Health England report estimated that e-cigarettes were around 95 per cent less harmful than conventional cigarettes.
