I would like to add an element to the praise given retired Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Ron Freeman by the Post-Gazette in its editorial on his death (Dec. 31,"A Credit to His Badge"). Ron taught courses about the work of the Pittsburgh police department as part of the Osher programs for seniors at both the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Hundreds attended those classes over the many years he taught, without compensation. In doing so, we met a man with unusual human qualities and resourcefulness.

Here is an example of those traits. Ron told this story at one of the Osher programs: He was off duty, out of uniform and in his car when he heard on the police radio that a man was outside the railing of the Homestead High Level Bridge and threatening to jump. …
