PATERSON — A man was placed into custody after a vacant home caught fire Wednesday, neighbors said.

The blaze started on the second floor of a three-story home on East 25th St. at 11:15 a.m., Paterson Deputy Fire Chief William Henderson said. The blaze went up to three alarms.

"We noticed steam coming out of the house. Then we started seeing flames," said neighbor George Mercer. "The cops arrested a man."

Henderson could not comment on whether someone was arrested or if anyone was injured.

"I'm not aware of any fatality," Henderson added.

"There were reportedly people inside, but that's unconfirmed."

The fire was placed under control at about 1:30 p.m. Henderson said.

Mercer, a six-year resident, said squatters have attempted to seek shelter in the vacant home. …
