1778 English navigator Capt. James Cook reached the present-day Hawaiian Islands, which he named the "Sandwich Islands."

1862 The 10th president of the United States, John Tyler, died in Richmond, Va., at age 71, shortly before he could take his seat as an elected member of the Confederate Congress.

1944 A "ceiling zero" smog blanketed Pittsburgh and prevented thousands of war workers from reaching their jobs and homes.

1967 Albert DeSalvo, who claimed to be the "Boston Strangler," was convicted of armed robbery, assault and sex offenses. He was sentenced to life and was killed in prison in 1973.

1993 An eight-month strike of Pittsburgh's two newspapers ends as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette resumed publication. The Pittsburgh Press would no longer be published. …
