A COUPLE who spent much of their first two decades of married life apart have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

George, 81, and Sylvia Brewster, 78, of Marple, first met shortly after he joined the Royal Navy in 1954.

He served alongside Sylvia's brother Brian and the pair met when he visited his pal during home leave.

Further visits then involved George hitchhiking from Plymouth, where he docked, to Manchester.

The couple married four years later at All Soul's Church, in Beswick, and George then served around the world for 20 years.

They finally settled in their current home on Goyt Avenue and now have 11 grandchildren.

George said: "I had already seen Sylvia in pictures and when I saw her I thought she looked even better in real life.

on their "Being in the navy took me all over the world, so we had to spend a lot of time apart, but it made the times we were together even more special.

"There's no secret to a long and happy marriage, it just happens, it is about give and take and being caring. …
