Pitt to Ramp Up Reviews of Sexual Misconduct Complaints

A two-pronged approach to investigating allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination at the University of Pittsburgh - current and past - is expected to gain focus with spring semester classes in session.

A University Senate committee met Thursday and advanced a draft statement that embraces the university's efforts and directs those wishing to report an incident to a designated campus web page: http://www.diversity.pitt.edu/report-incident.

The matter surfaced last month after Carol Stabile, a professor at Pitt until 2005, wrote a blog posted Dec. 13 by Ms. Magazine. In it, she recounted incidents of harassment and discrimination in the communications department and asserted that the university had not acted to end the behavior.

Chancellor Patrick Gallagher has said the university's Title IX office "is leading a full investigation to assess the department's present culture and practices." He also said Pitt is embarking on "an external review of previous claims related to the department that date back more than a decade. …
