WHEN Khaldoon Al Mubarak flew into Manchester before Christmas to discuss City's transfer policy for the next two windows, Alexis Sanchez was not even on his mind.

Top of the list was a centre-back, but there is no short-termism at City these days, and he was not locked in meetings with Pep Guardiola, chief executive Ferran Soriano and football director Txiki Begiristain just to figure out what would happen in January.

They were looking at a strategy for the next 18 months - with the pencil marking out a centre-back move in January, another pitch for Sanchez in the summer, and a thrust for another defensive midfielder.

The latter problem is based on the fact that the exceptional Fernandinho turns 33 at the end of this season - he needs a long-term replacement. …
