EX-SALFORD hooker Gareth Owen will continue to captain Oldham this season, despite the fact he is unlikely to be fit for the opening rounds of the new season.

The 25-year-old suffered a campaign-ending injury midway through his first season as Roughyeds skipper and so could not contribute on the field as Scott Naylor's side ultimately suffered relegation from the second tier.

"It was tough," admitted Owen. "But all that's behind us now as we look forward with confidence to the challenges that Betfred League 1 will throw at us."

Still rehabing after surgery on his left foot, Owen is expected to have two vice captains, but coach Naylor has not yet revealed who they will be. The roles were filled by Sammy Gee and Scott Leatherbarrow last season, but both have since left the club. …
