Man Charged with Strangling Wife, Running Her over Suspect Awaits Hearing Jan. 16

A man was arraigned Wednesday on charges that he strangled his wife and ran over her leg with his vehicle in Northview Heights.

Pittsburgh police say Omar Matali, 31, was arguing with his wife, Hawa Lugundi, in an apartment around 6 p.m. Tuesday on Mt. Pleasant Road when he pushed her against a wall and choked her, according to a criminal complaint.

He then took Ms. Lugundi's cell phone, car keys and his son and got inside his vehicle outside, the complaint said.

When Ms. Lugundi opened the front passenger door and asked for her belongings back, Mr. Matali put his Ford Focus into reverse and hit the gas, striking her with the open door and knocking her to the ground, according to the complaint.

Ms. Lugundi told police that the door dragged her and the vehicle ran over her right leg. …
