HACKENSACK – Ramapo trailed by six points in the final 30 seconds of the first overtime and kept believing it had a chance.

The Green Raiders won it in the second overtime.

Ramapo fought back to defeat Dwight Morrow, 78-71, at Saturday's Mel Henderson Memorial Showcase at Hackensack, after trailing 62-56 with 25 seconds left in the first overtime.

"Our kids kept fighting," said coach Joe Sandberg, whose Green Raiders project to earn a top-six spot at Wednesday's Bergen County Jamboree selection and seeding meeting. "They never put their heads down."

Ramapo pulled within 62-58 in the first OT on a drive by junior guard KC Hunt (20 points). The Green Raiders cut the deficit to 62-60 on a three-point play by Hunt. They tied it at 63 in the final seconds of that OT on a drive by senior guard Jason Oppler (game-high 27 points). Ramapo (12-2) immediately took control in the second OT against a much-improved group from Dwight Morrow (8-5) that got 21 points from junior Owen Roberts and merits consideration for an at-large bid to the Jamboree.

Two Ramapo reserves who did not score through the first 36 minutes contributed points in the second four-minute OT: senior Ben Bitensky made a basket and two free throws. Senior Vasili Econopouly made two free throws for a 75-70 lead with 30 seconds left.

"They're my sixth and seventh men," Sandberg said. "They're defenders and they don't really look to score, and they stepped up in overtime."

DON BOSCO 62, DWIGHT-ENGLEWOOD 46: Don Bosco (12-2) clamped down defensively in the second half and opened the third with a 13-0 run to take a 39-28 lead and erase a magnificent first half by undersized Dwight-Englewood (9-5).

Ironmen senior forward Marcellus Earlington scored eight of his 25 in the third, and added 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-5 Earlington muscled his way inside and scored a majority of his points on putbacks. …
