WANAQUE – This time the Lakeland girls' basketball team is playing for keeps.

A year after finishing in the runner-up spot in the 2017 Passaic County Tournament as the fifth seed, the Lancers nabbed the top seed in this year's event when the county coaches convened on Wednesday night.

"We're playing well, but there's room for improvement," said Lakeland head coach Brian Phillips. "Getting the top seed doesn't mean we have a ticket to the finals. We're going to have to play a full four quarters of basketball every time we take the court. This tournament is wide open and more than a handful of teams are capable of winning it this year."

Wayne Valley (5-4) earned the second seed while defending champions Kennedy (5-6) and Passaic County Tech (6-3) are seed third and fourth respectively.

As expected, West Milford (6-4) is seeded fifth, Eastern Christian (7-1) is sixth, Clifton (6-4) is seventh and DePaul (3-6) and Passaic Valley are seeded eighth and ninth.

The rest of the field includes 10-Wayne Hills (3-6), 11-Pompton Lakes (6-4), 12-Hawthorne (3-6), 13-Manchester (3-6), 14-Passaic (1-6) and 15-Eastside (0-7).

The top four seeds earn byes to the quarterfinal round.

The tournament tips off next week with preliminary-round action and the first round must be played on or before Feb. 3.

The quarterfinals are set for Feb. 10 at the highest seed home court and the semifinals follow the following Saturday, Feb. 17 at Kennedy High School in an 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. start.

The preliminary round matchups pits 13-Manchester vs. 12-Hawthorne; 14-Passaic vs.11-Pompton Lakes, and 15 Eastside vs. 10-Wayne Hills.

In the first round, 9-Passaic Valley takes on 8-DePaul with the winner getting top-seed Lakeland in the quarterfinals. …
