I was dismayed to open the editorial pages of the Post-Gazette on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to read the lead editorial (Jan. 15, "Reason as Racism"). It was another sorry attempt to excuse the president's words and intentions on some countries as reason, rather than racism.

The PG's position might be tenable if this had been the first time the president had used "inelegant" language to discuss black and brown people, but it wasn't. It simply follows a pattern of saying things that are bigoted. Does anyone on the PG editorial board recall the birther issue, the comments disparaging Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists, that a Mexican-American judge couldn't be trusted to be fair, that those who marched with white nationalists in Charlottesville were some very fine people, and that Muslims should be banned from this country? …
