Slow Down on Legalizing Pot's Use

I applaud some recent opinion commentaries printed in The Record and NorthJersey.com regarding the legalization in New Jersey of what is euphemistically called "recreational marijuana." I do believe that "enhanced state revenue" is what is really behind the Murphy administration's all-out push for legalization. The concern for public safety in New Jersey should be our first priority.

The fact that determining whether someone is driving under the influence of marijuana by using "traditional breath tests will not work, and even blood tests fail to determine when someone smoked marijuana," should be frightening for everyone.

Another health issue sometimes forgotten in the rush to legalize marijuana is the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. Perhaps people have forgotten the campaign to eliminate cigarettes and secondhand smoke from public places. I can remember a time when people smoked in airplanes, restaurants and workplaces.

Today, we take clean air for granted in New Jersey. Marijuana has been treated differently, however. …
