Union officials say about one-thousand employees will be affected when Sobeys Inc. shuts down 10 Safeway stores in B-C.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union is questioning the timing of the announcement affecting B-C Safeway employees, saying labour negotiations were just about to begin.

Union Local 1518 says Sobeys indicated it may open FreshCo discount stores at five of the closed Safeway locations.

The Safeway locations slated for closure include Lougheed Mall, City Square, Sunwood Square, Point Grey, Royal Oak, Blundel, Broadmoor, Newton Town Centre, Strawberry Hills and Mission. (The Canadian Press)

Derek Nighbor, who is chief executive of the Forest Products Association of Canada, says the deal will help increase access to key global markets.

He says fostering exports will create more middle-class jobs in the over 600 forest-dependent communities across Canada.

He also says the new trade deal should help the forest sector diversify its markets. (The Canadian Press)

Gardner says she still lives in Port Alberni but on higher ground.

She says she remembers quite well what happened 54 years ago but she doesn't live in fear of natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis. (The Canadian Press)
