'A Lot of Parents Don't Seem to Be Working but There Just Aren't That Many Jobs Here'

COLDHURST residents told the M.E.N. poverty was rife, but that they were shocked the area had the worst child deprivation rate in the country.

Factory worker Andy Smith, 42, said: "There is nothing for kids around here.

"There are children that will come around and knock on your door, even after Christmas, saying 'can we sing you a song for £1?'.

"They're just trying to get a bit of money. Last year, there was a food van that would come and park up selling burgers and chips.

"All of the kids would congregate around it, but wouldn't have any money.

"There was one little girl who would always ask for a can of coke. When I would go and buy something they would gather around me.

"I would just look at what I had bought and give them my food. How could you not? "It is a shock Coldhurst has the worst rate in the country - you always think 'there must be something worse than this'. There isn't much for children here. It's on the bottom of places where people would choose to live. …
