MONTREAL - The Canadian Press has learned that Canada's counter-proposals on controversial American demands for a renewed NAFTA have not been rejected out of hand by U-S Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland met with Lighthizer today in Davos, Switzerland, and a well-placed source says they discussed the U-S demands on continental content requirements for automobiles, NAFTA's dispute resolution mechanisms, and for a sunset clause.

The source says Lighthizer didn't shoot anything down and that he and Freeland agreed on the need to make some progress.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says Lighthizer was engaged, he asked questions and he and Freeland had a substantive conversation. …
