It is the Second Amendment to the Constitution gone way wrong. The people who adopted that amendment in 1791 could not have envisioned the resulting gun culture and 33,000 deaths of Americans by Americans every year.

In Fayette County on Sunday, yet another person who felt wronged grabbed and loaded his assault rifle and added to the death count and ruined lives (Jan. 30, "Family, Friends Gather to Remember Four Killed in Fayette County Shooting"). After each of these killings, we search for the motive and ask whether the weapons were obtained legally. The answers make no difference. There are tens of millions of gun owners in this country and anyone with a perceived grudge can get his hands on a gun. How much longer can this go on before we are afraid to leave our houses? …
