Everyone is familiar with the matchstick men of Stretford artist LS Lowry. Prints of his work bring industrial scenes of 20th century Salford into homes around the world. But, for almost all his working life, Lowry was a rent collector, not an artist.

LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY was born in November 1887.

Many of his drawings and paintings depict urban and industrial landscapes, representative of the North West of England in the mid 20th century. He is well known for his unique style, particularly the people he painted which are often referred to as 'matchstick men'.

Lowry spent his childhood in the Manchester suburb of Victoria Park but moved to Pendlebury in 1902. The district became the inspiration behind much of his work as he was fascinated by the textile mills, factories and industrial buildings. …
