City Schools to Honor Notable Alumni for Black History Month

Pittsburgh Public Schools will celebrate Black History Month a little differently this year.

Besides teaching students about notable African-Americans throughout history, the school district also wants to highlight black alumni who are making contributions closer to home.

Each weekday in February, the district will highlight on its website an alumnus it believes is making waves in Pittsburgh's art and culture scene. The list includes former students who graduated in the Class of 1950 through the Class of 2016. Each day, the district will post short biographies that include where the alumni went to school and information about their work.

Here are the 21 honorees: Black Steel, DJ; Lindsay Hayes, photographer; Naomi Ruth Allen, poet; JoAnne Bates, artist; Camerin "Camo" Nesbit, muralist; Dominique Scaife, sculptor; Carter Redwood, actor; Kenneth Branson, art teacher; Kamau Ware, photographer; Cue Perry, artist; John Edgar Wideman, author; Aisha Sharif-Lucas, music teacher; Cassaundra and Sheldon Williams, singers; Brian Burley, author; Naomi Chambers, artist; Corey Carrington, artist; Alisha Murray, music teacher; Darrel Kinsel, cultural agitator; Nisha Blackwell, entrepreneur; Howie Alexander, teaching artist. …
