Mahwah Councilman-Elect Declines Seat

MAHWAH — Councilman-elect Jonathan Marcus announced Tuesday that he will not accept his seat on the Township Council due to "an unexpected situation" beyond his control.

Marcus said in a statement that he must focus on his well-being and that of his family.

"I cannot in good faith serve the residents of Mahwah at a time when I need to shift my time, focus and energy away from serving others and instead focus it on preserving myself and my family," he stated.

Marcus said he will also resign from his positions on the township's Planning Board and Environmental Commission.

He declined to comment further when reached by phone.

Mayor Bill Laforet said he was shocked by the news, calling Marcus a "dedicated public servant."

"It's a terrible loss for our community," Laforet said. …
