PEP Guardiola has assured Vincent Kompany he still has a part to play in City's quadruple pursuit.

City broke their transfer record to sign £57m Aymeric Laporte last month - with Guardiola viewing the Frenchman as the long-term partner for John Stones.

But he started Kompany in the 1-1 draw at Burnley on Saturday - and insists the fit again Belgian remains an important figure for the Premier League leaders.

"Vincent is fit, is ready, it was so important for us to play Vincent in these kind of games," said Guardiola.

"Vincent in these kinds of games, and other kinds, is a top, top player."

Laporte was outstanding on his debut against West Brom last week and Guardiola believes he has secured one of the top defensive prospects in Europe.

But he opted against starting the 23-year-old at Turf Moor, where Sean Dyche's side put City under intense aerial pressure. …
