LEIGH were well beaten on their return to the Betfred Championship, falling to a 34-12 defeat to Toronto Wolfpack in the Canadian side's first fixture in the second tier.

The Centurions handed debuts to 10 new players and owner Derek Beaumont heralded pre-game the fact every member of the 17-man playing squad has previously competed at Super League or NRL level, but it was the newly-promoted Wolfpack who looked more at home at Championship level.

Neil Jukes' side had started the stronger, scoring at the end of their very first set in possession when centre Peter Mata'utia shook off a challenge from former Leigh winger Adam Higson and got the ball away to captain Harrison Hansen, who touched down.

After some great hands across the line, Matty Dawson-Jones then doubled the home side's advantage, but Toronto grew into the fixture and trailed by just two points at half-time after tries from Adam Sidlow and Liam Kay. …
