Winter Weather Advisory in Effect Today

A number of area school districts began announcing two-hour delays Tuesday evening in anticipation of a winter storm making its way into southwestern Pennsylvania that could affect the morning commute.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Allegheny and surrounding counties for the storm that was expected to drop 3 to 6 inches of snow beginning early Wednesday.

"The morning commute will be the most impacted," said Bill Modzelewski, a meteorologist with the weather service in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Modzelewski said the snow would start falling between 2 and 4 a.m. Wednesday before turning into a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain about 7 a.m. Cold air will move back into the region by noon and the mix will change back to snow, he said.
