AND THE WINNER IS ... * It's not up for an Oscar, but a locally made video of a mouse's lung did pick up a prize.

Three members of the Washington University medical school's Center for Cellular Imaging won an award at the 2017 BioArt competition for their video analysis of a mouse's lungs.

The center's scientific director James Fitzpatrick, staff scientist Matthew Joens and research assistant Daniel Geanon created the video, in collaboration with biologist David Ornitz and pediatrician Kel Vin Woo.

The image provides insight into a potentially fatal illness that plagues premature babies: high blood pressure in the lungs caused by lack of oxygen.

More than 500,000 babies are born prematurely in the U.S. each year, many of them before their lungs have developed properly

The new video process allows doctors to see capillaries that had been too thin to trace with existing methods. The color coding provides researchers with better clues to work toward a solution to the disease.

The work now is on display at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland. The contest is held by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.

WINNING PAIR * Variety the Children's Charity has named its "Woman and Man of the Year" for 2018.

Cheryl "Cheri" Fromm is being recognized for her work with a slew of local organizations. She has served on the boards of the Sheldon Concert Hall, the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, St. Louis Zoo Friends, Missouri History Museum and the St. Louis Art Museum.

She also is an active volunteer with St. Louis Children's Hospital and the United Way of Greater St. Louis.

L.B. Eckelkamp, chairman and chief executive of the Bank of Washington, is active in the St. Francis Borgia Parish, the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Mercy Hospital, Four Rivers YMCA, Missouri Botanical Garden and the Boy Scouts of America.
