Lambert Passenger Total Jumped by 5.5 Percent in 2017

St. Louis Lambert International Airport's passenger total grew by 5.5 percent last year, following a 9.5 percent increase the year before.

In a report to the city's Airport Commission, airport managers said Wednesday that 14.7 million people began or ended their journeys at the airport, up from more than 13.9 million in 2016.

The year-end report also showed a nearly 30 percent hike in passengers stopping at Lambert via connecting flights through Lambert. Much of that is due to Southwest Airlines, Lambert's dominant carrier, moving connecting flights here from Chicago Midway Airport.

The upbeat statistics were released amid the city's ongoing look at possibly leasing the publicly owned airport to private management.

Mayor Lyda Krewson has said that although Lambert has improved significantly in the past few years, the airport could still do better and that privatization should at least be considered. …
