WHALLEY Range rock band James were a big noise on the Manchester music scene in the 1980s and 90s. Famed for their hit singles Sit Down and She's A Star, the group has sold millions of albums worldwide.

¦ The band's line-up originally consisted of Paul Gilbertson, Jim Glennie and Gavan Whelan, with Tim Booth joining shortly afterwards. ¦ Tony Wilson of Factory Records spotted the band at a gig at The Hacienda. They recorded their debut single Jimone at Strawberry Studios in Stockport. It was released on the Factory label in 1983.

¦ In 1985, James supported The Smiths on their Meat Is Murder tour. ¦ After the release of their second LP entitled James II, Gilbertson was replaced by Larry Gott. The band walked away from Factory Records and released two albums which failed to reach the top 40. …
