Another Campanile Takes over BC Sideline

Article excerpt

Bergen Catholic didn't wait long. Or look far.

Vito Campanile will replace his younger brother Nunzio as head football coach at Bergen Catholic.

Vito, the oldest of the four Campanile brothers, comes to Oradell from Seton Hall Prep, where he guided the Pirates to respectability the last three years, and was maybe one bad call away from a signature win over Don Bosco in the 2016 playoffs.

Seton Hall Prep is an outstanding school with a tremendous new athletic facility, but it will probably always be thought of as a baseball and basketball school first. Vito Campanile's heart and roots are in Bergen County — his son will probably be a Crusader football player — and the right move for him was to take the job.

Having Vito come aboard means that the Crusaders culture won't change very much. Heck, the offensive playbook won't have to change that much. Vito won at Bergen Tech and Westwood with an offense predicated on throwing the ball downfield, taking some chances, using the athletes in space.

That's today's game — anyone else see this past Super Bowl where defense was really just token resistance?

Vito is different from Nunzio, and not just his raspier voice. Nunzio used to say himself that Vito was the best motivator out of the bunch. But all the Campanile share the same ingredients of a successful coach: tenacity, creativity and personality.

"X's and O's guys are a dime a dozen," said one former parent of Westwood players when Vito coached there. "What makes Vito and his brothers unique is that they are natural leaders who connect with their players, parents, and everyone in the building and community."

"To the Crusader Nation – I am going to give my heart and soul," said Vito in a press release put out by the school trumpeting his hire. "Let's get to work."

The first thing Vito will have to settle on is his coaching staff. Last year, Nunzio assembled a coaching staff that included former Don Bosco coach Greg Toal and former Bergen Catholic head coach Fred Stengel.

Toal could certainly feel slighted that he wasn't offered the head coaching job at Bergen Catholic, although he may see what other veteran coaches see in that being an assistant is a pretty good gig. …
