Soon after giving solid indications the team would be a seller at the Feb. 26 trade deadline, the New York Rangers began the shakeup Thursday, putting defenseman Brendan Smith on waivers.

It was a strange way to say happy birthday.

Smith, who turned 29 Thursday, signed a four-year, $17.4 million contract ($4.35 million average annual value) with New York June 29 and had one goal, seven assists in 44 games.
